90% of FDA-approved drugs target a protein. Despite a nearly four-fold increase in global R&D spend from 2000-2020, the number of new drugs approved each year has not increased appreciably. In addition, after 10-15 years in development, only 2 of 10 marketed drugs return revenues that match or exceed their R&D costs.

A dramatic increase in sensitivity will enable researchers to observe and better understand proteins that are effectively the “dark matter” of today’s drug development efforts. Doing so will lead to more efficient, cost-effective, and efficacious pharma R&D programs.

Diagnostics

Despite an estimated 150,000 papers documenting thousands of claimed biomarkers, there are only approximately 100 blood-based biomarkers in routine clinical use today.

What is Proteomics?

Proteomics is the large-scale study of the proteome: the tens of thousands of proteins expressed within a cell, tissue, or organism. The proteome is highly varied and dynamically changing across every cell in the human body every moment of every day. Understanding proteins and how they are controlled is critical because they are the functional drivers of every aspect of human physiology, from how we develop in the womb to how susceptible we are to disease.
