Software Engineer – Instrument Control

San Carlos, CA & Seattle, WA

The Nautilus Assay will enable new insights in proteomics and biomedical research, opening the door to personalized medicine. We are developing a connected instrument that integrates exquisitely sensitive optics with image processing algorithms at a surprising scale. This instrument and its software stack will coordinate seamlessly with our tooling, cloud computation, and our intuitive UI. We are looking for someone to design the workflows and services that will enable us to acquire and process data at speed. We are beginning to investigate our system performance, formalize experiment workflows, and the build the capability to track and tune our operating parameters. Your work will connect moving parts in the physical world with large-scale analysis in the cloud.

Job Description

Role and Responsibilities:

You are a motivated and self-directed generalist whose insights will shape the workflows and abstractions that make our instruments easy to use. This role will cross multiple disciplines and levels of detail, from controlling sensor alignment to managing experiment workflow and interactions with our cloud processing pipeline.

  • Designing intuitive on-device workflows and implementing both the interface and back-end.
  • Writing algorithms and control systems for the instrument and expose them over network APIs
  • Working closely with our engineering and research teams to produce designs that are ready for both research and production use
  • Collaborating with users to iterate on new hardware and features.

These are early days at Nautilus, we value creative thinkers who can contribute outside their roles and who can adapt to changing requirements as we push the limits of our hardware, software, and instrumentation.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • You have 4+ years of experience in a software organization.
  • You have a solid grasp of computer science fundamentals and are eager to tackle challenging, unique problems.
  • High proficiency with at least one interpreted and one statically typed compiled language. Those languages will ideally be Python and C/C++.
  • You find it fun to design and build complex systems while working side-by-side with their users.
  • You know how to use integration, functional, and unit test frameworks to quickly build out tests that prove the behavior of complex systems.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience in instrumentation or life-sciences research is a plus.
  • Experience with embedded systems development.
  • An intuition for when to go deep and when to solve the problem at hand.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing and web APIs and a willingness to apply those concepts in a hardware context.
  • You enjoy developing software that deals with the physical world.
