Purchasing Manager

Job Description

Role and Responsibilities:
  • Initially requires “hands-on” execution of daily purchasing, planning, and inventory management activities
  • Engagement with existing suppliers to negotiate costs and lead times to support the needs of the research teams
  • Evolve supplier relationships from purchase order based to longer term partnerships based on long term planning, involvement in development projects and longer-term supply agreements
  • Develop processes to track and manage inventory; ensure that there is no “down time” on the research teams due to lack of materials and supplies
  • Develop and manage logistics and shipping partnerships; implement logistics processes to minimize customs clearance and delivery lead times/costs
  • Work with the Finance team to support all administrative processes associated with supply chain activities including invoice issue resolution, on-time supplier payments, shipment/delivery confirmation for revenue recognition
  • Support the implementation of ERP and purchasing systems
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Must have 7 to 10 years prior experience in a supplier management function at a life sciences company
  • Must have a BS/BA degree in technical or business area of study
  • Demonstrate examples of successful supplier partnership development
  • Demonstrate examples of successful supplier negotiations
  • Working knowledge of logistics and shipping processes
  • Prior experience in negotiating supplier contracts; knowledge of basic supplier contract terms
  • In-depth experience in working with contract manufacturers and other life sciences outsourcing providers
  • Prior experience in the implementation of an ERP system
Preferred Skills:
  • Must have excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Experience in project management associated with supplier production ramps
  • Must demonstrate success in working with cross functional teams; must be internal and external customer focused and demonstrate a “service” oriented attitude
  • Must be willing to perform “hands-on” tasks as well as demonstrate the ability to delegate tasks to other team members
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work independently to successful manage projects and tasks through to successful completion
  • Must demonstrate a basic understanding of finance and accounting principles related to P&L management (profitability drivers), capital equipment tracking, inventory management and revenue recognition
  • Prior experience in using ERP and purchasing systems
  • Prior start-up company experience is highly preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
