Operations Manager

San Carlos, CA

This is a broadly scoped operations manager position that has responsibility for all aspects of successful integration of new product designs into a manufacturing environment. A successful candidate will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the company’s success by shepherding the Nautilus product through stage appropriate manufacturing environments to eventual high-volume production and ensuring that quality standards are created and met throughout the production stages. This role will also have an extensive impact on developing the supply base across the entire Nautilus solution. This position will allow an individual to manage project teams composed of internal and external partners and, based on performance, could eventually incorporate even greater managerial responsibilities.

Job Description

Role and Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the design engineering team to select materials and production processes that will provide the functionality and quality required for each component/assembly
  • Identify and evaluate external manufacturing partners and develop supplier selection criteria
  • Once suppliers have been selected, develop new product integration plans and supplier management processes that will result in successful long-term partnerships
  • Negotiate supply contracts and pricing with component and manufacturing supply partners
  • Develop and manage demand forecasts and fulfillment of open orders with supply partners
  • Develop inventory management systems to ensure that sufficient quantities of components and assemblies are available to meet Nautilus and Nautilus customer needs while also ensuring that excess and obsolete inventory is minimized
  • Coordinate with the design engineering team to ensure that adequate specifications/documentation exists so that components and assemblies are clearly defined and can be consistently reproduced
  • Work with the design engineering team to implement a documentation/PDM system
  • Implement a change management process and coordinate the ongoing execution of the change process both internally and with contract manufacturing partners
  • Develop quality programs and detailed inspection plans to ensure that components and assemblies meet required specifications
  • Develop reporting metrics to monitor continuous improvement
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production and quality issues both internally and at manufacturing partners
  • Act as the primary interface between Nautilus and external manufacturing partners
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • BS/MS Mechanical or Industrial Engineering
  • Knowledge of quality metrics and tracking systems
  • Must have excellent communication and organization skills
  • MS Office expertise is a “must”
Preferred Skills:
  • BS/MS BioMedical Engineering preferred
  • Excellent skills in developing project schedules and on-time completion of milestones/deliverables
  • Excellent ability to work cross functionally and motivate others to support schedule deliverables
  • Prior experience in hiring, developing and managing a high performance team
  • Must have a good understanding of business management and Profit & Loss drivers
  • Knowledge of contract terms and experience in negotiating contracts
  • Prior experience and evidence of success in launching products into volume production
  • Experience in working with contract manufacturers
  • A knowledge of prototype and high-volume production processes
  • A basic knowledge of plastic component design and injection molding
  • Prior experience in developing and implementing quality inspection programs and ongoing quality management systems/metrics reporting/corrective action/continuous improvement
  • A working knowledge of product documentation management systems and processes
  • Prior experience in systems and tools implementation (eg ERP systems)
  • Prior experience in working at a biotech start-up company
  • Analytical capabilities to facilitate/support the decision-making process
